Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard says the first Star Sixes tournament at London’s O2 arena “can’t come quick enough” as he looks forward to his playing return.
After winning 114 international caps for England and captaining his country in 38 of those games, Gerrard will be pulling on the armband again this summer.
Having retired from professional football as recently as November 2016 following two seasons in the MLS with LA Galaxy, the recently-appointed Liverpool Academy coach will return to action for Star Sixes in July.
“As a player competing in Star Sixes I’m really excited and can’t wait to compete against all the other top players involved in the top teams,” said the 36-year-old.
“I’m very lucky and blessed to have experienced so many internationals as the England captain, but I’m really looking forward to playing with my old teammates and getting the England shirt back on.
“Hopefully we’ll do well and make our fans really proud.”
Gerrard’s England team is shaping up well, with five of his ten-man squad already confirmed.
He will be linking up with three former Anfield teammates – Michael Owen, Emile Heskey and David James – while Manchester United’s Premier League and Champions League-winning defender Rio Ferdinand is also signed up.
And Gerrard says playing with those names again will remind him of some very happy memories in an England shirt.
“I’m really excited with the team we’ve got in place so far, so I’m really looking forward to Star Sixes – it can’t come quick enough,” he continued.
“It takes me back to the Germany 5-1 game [in 2001], Emile and Michael getting on the scoresheet and also having Rio at the back as a rock-solid defender. We’ve also got Jamo as well.
“There’s a Liverpool contingent in there, but it’s all about England, doing the country justice and trying to do well in the tournament.”
England will be one of 12 nations competing at the four-day Star Sixes tournament at the O2 arena in London from 13 to 16 July 2017.
International legends including Roberto Carlos (Brazil), Michael Ballack (Germany), Carles Puyol (Spain), Deco (Portugal), Robert Pires (France), Dominic Matteo (Scotland) and Jay-Jay Okocha (Nigeria) will also be entertaining the fans in the first-ever Star Sixes tournament.
