Donnelly burst onto the scene as a young 19-year-old striker of genuine promise for Celtic, netting five goals in 12 games in his first season. He made his Scotland debut at the end of the 1996/97 season in friendlies against Wales and Malta. His best season for Celtic saw him score 12 goals in the season they won the SPL and Scottish League Cup. He was a member of Scotland’s 1998 World Cup squad in France before a move to Sheffield Wednesday followed, but injuries played their part, meaning he did not fulfil his true potential. He moved back to Scotland to finish his career.
