Raúl Meireles will return to London in July to play for Portugal once again as they look to become the first-ever Star Sixes champions.
The former Chelsea midfielder is no stranger to success having spent a season in the English capital where he helped the Stamford Bridge outfit win The FA Cup and the Champions League.
And he can’t wait to return for the inaugural six-a-side international tournament at The O2, as he prepares to link up with some legendary former teammates.
Meireles, who also had a year with Liverpool, was speaking to Talksport about his involvement in Star Sixes, which sees 12 nations battling it out for the trophy from 13 to 16 July.
“I’m very excited to be a part of Star Sixes. It will be a great event,” he said.
“I will play with and against some of the best players in football history. In my team I will have Deco, Vítor Baía, Nuno Gomes, Bosingwa, Fernando Couto and Maniche.”
He continued: “And there will also be stars like Steven Gerrard my former teammate at Liverpool, Roberto Carlos, Rivaldo, Ballack, Del Piero, and many other big names.
“It will be a great tournament and I’m looking forward to enjoying Star Sixes.”
“Our group is difficult, Germany will be a very strong team, also France, but I think we also have great players so it will be interesting to see what happens.”
Meireles, 34, retired only last year following a stint in Turkey with Fenerbahçe and during his career played 73 times for his country, scoring ten times.
He featured regularly in the Portugal team alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, and believes the world’s best player – linked to a move away from Real Madrid – would be at home back in the Premier League where he spent six years with Manchester United.
“I think anything can happen with Cristiano. If he wants to leave there are some very good clubs like Manchester United who can offer a good contract to him.
“He was very successful in the Premier League, so if he doesn’t want to play at Real Madrid, the Premier League would be the right place for him to be.”
See Meireles and his Portugal team at the four-day Star Sixes tournament at The O2 in London from 13 to 16 July 2017. Tickets are now available to buy online, with prices starting at just £30 for adults and £10 for children. Visit Ticketmaster or AXS.
