Along with Star Sixes teammate Miguel Zepeda, Méndez was part of the golden age of Club Atlas, and made his debut in 1998. He established himself as an important member of the defensive unit and spent six years at Atlas. He remained in the Mexican league, with spells at Toluca, Montterrey and Tigres, before moving to Argentina for Vélez Sársfield. After just one season he returned to Toluca. He figured in Mexico’s victorious team at the 2003 Gold Cup, and also played at the 2004 Copa America and 2006 FIFA World Cup.
