Ludovic Giuly Says ‘Super’ France have Sights set on Star Sixes Success

Kryptonite may be the only thing to stop France from winning the inaugural Star Sixes tournament at The O2 this summer – because they don’t just have Superman, they have a whole Superteam!

Ludovic Giuly, the former Barcelona and Monaco midfielder, made the bold claim as he was unveiled as France’s latest recruit to the new world six-a-side tournament for iconic former internationals, along with goalkeeper Sebastien Frey and former AC Milan and Chelsea legend Marcel Desailly.

French captain Robert Pirès has already signed up Olivier Dacourt, William Gallas and Éric Abidal, so the latest three make a line-up that is ‘tres formidable’, according to Giuly.

“We are very fit and we have a super team,” said the 40-year-old, who won the Confederations Cup with France in 2003.

“I played for a long time with them and its always a pleasure to share the dressing room with my team-mates. It will be great to be with them at Star Sixes.”

With Pirès now focussing on recruiting the final three members of his ten-strong squad, the completed French line-up promises to be even more magnifique!

Other superstars on show at the tournament from 13 to 16 July will include Roberto Carlos, Michael Ballack, Steven Gerrard and Deco, who was Giuly’s team-mate when Barcelona won the Champions League in 2006.

Brazil, England, Germany, Italy and Spain are among the other countries who will have world-class squads in the 12-nation event, and Giuly said: “We know we will face other strong national teams but we have really good players and every time we play together we play to win.

“It’s a very strong feeling to play for my country. Every time I wear this jersey I must respect it as I am representing my country. I love to represent France and defend its colours and values.”

He fondly remembers playing at Chelsea in the Champions League, and added: “I know the fans in London are amazing and really love football.

“It’s a country that breathes football – and I love that. They have amazing stadiums, that are always packed. I loved playing there and am really looking forward to playing in London again.”
