Garba Lawal was typically a midfielder, but his versatility saw him utilised in most positions, mainly full-back, defensive midfield, winger and attacking midfield. He was a popular figure wherever he went due to his work rate, discipline and honesty. His career saw him travel to many countries, such as Greece, Bulgaria, Tunisia, Sweden, China and Portugal. However, his best spell of his career was at Dutch side Roda where he played for six seasons. He played at four African Cup of Nations, two World Cups and was a member of the gold medal winning Olympic team in 1996.
