Altamirano started his career at Cruz Azul, but it was a Santos Laguna where he truly made an impact. He cemented his place on the right side of midfield and within twelve months had earned his first international cap. After leaving Santos Laguna, he played for seven clubs. All four of his international goals came in 2004, and he featured at the 2004 Copa América and 2005 Gold Cup, reaching the quarter-finals in both.
