Gaizka Mendieta, Spain

Named European Midfielder of the Year two years in a row, Mendieta was the midfield general of the Valencia squad that reached successive Champions League finals. He moved to Lazio in 2001 becoming the most expensive Spanish player. A brief loan spell at Barcelona was followed by four years at Middlesbrough, where he helped the club win their first major domestic honour – the League Cup. Mendieta was a solid midfielder and a master technician and at his best he would have walked into any team in Europe. In Valencia he will also be remembered as the modest legend who took them to the brink of glory. He retired in 2008 after four years with Boro.
