Two-time Champions League winner José Bosingwa is hoping to help Portugal complete an historic treble by winning Star Sixes at The 02, London, this summer.
The former Chelsea and Porto defender will return to the capital next month to pull on his national jersey again at the inaugural Star Sixes, the first competitive six-a-side world cup for iconic former internationals.
And with Cristiano Ronaldo & Co aiming to add the Confederations Cup this month to last summer’s EURO 2016 success in France, Bosingwa hopes to make it an international treble.
“It’s been a good couple of years for Portuguese football, and we can make it even better if we win Star Sixes,” said the attacking full-back.
“We’re hoping to give a good account of ourselves, and of course entertain the fans.”
That last point should not be a problem when the Portugal squad includes Deco, whom Bosingwa rates as highly as Ronaldo in terms of the big names he has played with.
He reflected: “I played with Deco at Porto, Chelsea and for Portugal and he was an amazing player, certainly one you would always want on your side in training matches. His skill and control were superb.”
But he also knows Ronaldo well and says the Real Madrid star is the best player in the world, having led Portugal to EURO 2016 success and then winning his fourth Champions League title after scoring twice against Juventus on Saturday.
“I’ve known Cristiano for a very long time, since he was a young player, and he has always worked so hard to get where he wants to,” added Bosingwa.
“For him, it is about constantly trying to improve. There are no limits to what he can do, and there can be no doubt now that he is the best player in the world.”
Bosingwa, who will also be partnered by ex-Chelsea loan signing Maniche, Vitor Baia and Fernando Couto in a strong-looking Portugal squad, is looking forward to catching up with former friends and foes at Star Sixes.
Michael Ballack, his former Stamford Bridge team-mate, will captain Germany while England’s Star Sixes skipper Steven Gerrard is another player he knows well. “There are so many great players on show, entertainers like Jay-Jay Okocha, so it will be a great event,” said Bosingwa.
Having won the Champions League with both Porto and Chelsea, he believes Antonio Conte’s men can go far in the competition next season – if they have a bit of luck.
“It is not just about having the best players – sometimes you need little things to go your way,” he added.
“When we won in 2012, we were down to ten men away to Barcelona in the semi-final and were a bit lucky to go through to the final, which we won on penalties.
“Chelsea have had an amazing season in the Premier League so who knows what they can do in the Champions League?”
Jose Bosingwa is the latest signing for Star Sixes, a six-a-side world cup for legends taking place at The O2, London, July 13-16. Tickets, starting at £30 adults and £10 U16s, are on sale at Ticketmaster and AXS.
