Simon Donnelly says Scotland will be out to upset the odds when they take on the world at Star Sixes this summer.
The ex-Celtic midfielder is in Dominic Matteo’s Tartan Army side who will be competing in the inaugural six-a-side tournament for former international players at The O2 in July.
Having collected ten caps for his country during his professional career, Donnelly is gearing up for a return to action and hopes his side can overcome group rivals Spain, Mexico and ‘Auld Enemy’ England.
“It’s a tournament that has caught the imagination,” said Donnelly. “With some of the players that are involved from all over the world, we will be looking forward to competing against them.
“I think we’ll be the underdogs, but as Leicester showed last season, sometimes underdogs have their day, so hopefully it will be ours. We’ll certainly be giving it our best shot.”
Scotland’s first game will be against Mexico on Thursday 13 July, then the following night will be a massive encounter with Steven Gerrard’s England team, also featuring Michael Owen, who Donnelly faced in a UEFA Cup tie in 1997.
He also hopes his side can muster a similar performance to when Scotland last won on English soil – the EURO 2000 play-off when Don Hutchison headed home a Wembley winner.
“I played against Michael Owen for Celtic, he was at Liverpool and it was one of his first games as he was breaking through,” recalled the former Sheffield Wednesday man.
“He scored against us up at Celtic Park, so it will be good to pit our wits against these guys again.
“There will also be guys there, like Steven Gerrard, who have just retired, so I imagine they’ll be quite sharp.”
He added: “Hopefully Big Don can pop up with another goal for us. I was at that game as a supporter and I think we were a wee bit unfortunate.
“Christian [Dailly] had that header late on that Seaman saved. We’ve been unlucky against the Auld Enemy over the last few years, so hopefully that can change in July.”
Scotland will be among the 12 nations competing at the four-day Star Sixes tournament at The O2 in London from 13 to 16 July 2017.
International legends including Roberto Carlos (Brazil), Robert Pirès (France), Carles Puyol (Spain), Deco (Portugal), Michael Ballack (Germany), Christian Abbiati (Italy) and Jay-Jay Okocha (Nigeria) will also be entertaining the fans in the first-ever Star Sixes tournament.
