Scotland’s Dominic Matteo has chosen his all-time dream six-a-side team and it includes a couple of his Star Sixes rivals!
The former Liverpool, Leeds United and Blackburn Rovers defender will be leading out his country as captain at the inaugural Star Sixes tournament this summer and when ask who would make his fantasy side, a couple of the England squad made the list.
The Three Lions duo played alongside the Scotsman at Anfield and Elland Road, while Matteo has also selected other old teammates with one of the biggest legends in the history of the game.
“Goalkeeper I’m going to say Nigel Martyn, I loved playing with him,” said Matteo. “People might say bigger names that him but for me, steady as you like and that’s what I like about a goalkeeper.
“Then, if I can choose anyone, I’d go [Franco] Baresi at the back, and I must say Rio [Ferdinand] as well, because I played with him and we had a good thing going on. He’s a great player.”
Matteo continued: “[Steven] Gerrard in midfield and John Barnes, who I was lucky enough to play with. He was an unbelievable player.
“And to knock the goals in, Ian Rush! If you want goals, that what he did best. Better than anyone.”
Matteo also picked a six-a-side team of current players, and he decided to not stray away from Catalan giants Barcelona.
“Of current players, I’d have to go with Messi and Suarez up front, with Neymar in behind.
“I’d need two solid back players, so I’d probably go with Pique and perhaps Mascherano would be good – I’m picking the Barcelona team here, by the way!” laughed Matteo.
“I think they’d be good at six-a-side, so I’ll have their goalie as well. Any of the Barcelona team.”
