David James will be back in competitive action this summer when he lines up for England at the inaugural Star Sixes tournament in London.
James, who made 53 appearances for the Three Lions during a near-25 year playing career, will be joined at The O2 by some of English football’s biggest names as they take on eleven other nations for the illustrious prize.
While legends like Roberto Carlos, Marcel Desailly, Deco and Michael Ballack will be turning out for their own countries in the new six-a-side international competition, goalkeeper James will have England icons Steven Gerrard, Michael Owen, Rio Ferdinand and Emile Heskey on his side.
With many more former internationals still to be named for the event, which runs from 13 to 16 July, there is one current England star who James would love to have in his team.
“Joe Hart!” Laughed the ex-Liverpool, Aston Villa, West Ham and Portsmouth stopper. “Then I could push myself into midfield.”
“But no, the current England player I would put in – and we have a nice squad as well – I think it would have to be Dele Alli.
“He’s got a bit of bite about him, hasn’t he? As with most fans this season, I’ve been very impressed by his development.
“And I reckon a Star Sixes appearance in the summer, because there are no tournaments, would help his career tremendously,” smiled James.
