France legend Robert Pirès cannot wait to represent his country again this summer and is aiming to add to his international trophy haul.
The former Arsenal winger won 79 caps with France and during his eight-year international career helped them to become European and world champions.
Now, as he prepares to lead out Les Bleus at the inaugural Star Sixes tournament at The O2 this summer, Pirès says he’s playing to win.
“It’s true, I’m involved for the big tournament in London with Star Sixes. I’m very happy because I am the captain for my country, for France,” said Pirès, who spent six years playing in London with the Gunners.
“It’s not the same [as eleven-a-side], but the quality will be good for the fans, and they can see good goals, and some very good players.
“I’m a competitor, and though I’m retired, when you play football the most important thing is to win.”
And Pirès, who also turned out for Metz, Marseille, Villarreal and Aston Villa during a glittering career, is also looking forward to playing at such a prestigious venue as London’s iconic indoor arena, The O2.
He will be joined in the French side by former Leeds United and Everton midfielder Olivier Dacourt, ex-Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham defender William Gallas and Barcelona icon Éric Abidal, while six other teammates are still to be unveiled.
“I’m excited to be able to play at The O2. Normally I go for the tennis or the basketball, but this time it will be very different.
“I think it will be a good event, it’s a good idea, because in London, in the UK, lots of people love football.
“It’s inside, the pitch is smaller and the people will see more dribbling, more skills, so I’m very happy to be a part of this event with Star Sixes.”
France will be one of 12 nations competing at the four-day Star Sixes tournament at The O2 arena in London from 13 to 16 July 2017.
International legends including Roberto Carlos (Brazil), Michael Ballack (Germany), Carles Puyol (Spain), Deco (Portugal), Steven Gerrard (England), Dominic Matteo (Scotland) and Jay-Jay Okocha (Nigeria) will also be entertaining the fans in the first-ever Star Sixes tournament.
