Amokachi excited to partner the man who taught Ronaldinho ‘tekkers’ at Star Sixes

Nigeria 2017

Daniel Amokachi says Star Sixes will be the perfect opportunity for a new generation of fans to see for themselves the tricks and skills that Jay-Jay Okocha taught the great Ronaldinho.

Ex-Everton FA Cup winner Amokachi joins Okocha in the Nigeria squad competing in Star Sixes at The O2, London, from 13-16 July, and he cannot wait to play against some of the world’s greatest players of the past decade or so.

The six-a-side world cup for former internationals will showcase the talents of such luminaries as Alessandro Del Piero, Steven Gerrard and Roberto Carlos, but it is Okocha who could impress young fans most with his amazing ball skills.

“Jay-Jay was one of the best African players of all time and certainly one of the most skilful,” said the striker.

“His style was unique, and I remember when Ronaldinho first played at Paris Saint-Germain he asked Jay-Jay to teach him some of his tricks.

“Now there is a chance for a new generation of fans to see him and others up close, and it is just as exciting for me to test myself against some of the great players that I never played against.

“It should be really exciting, and hopefully we can have a good few days where we can form a bond, too.”

Amokachi won an Olympic Gold medal and the African Nations Cup but quit international football when he was injured at France 98, his second World Cup finals.

“I was only 28 but that was the last time I played for my country, so to pull on the green shirt of Nigeria again will be exciting for me,” he added.

“It was my dream to play for my country and was always an honour to represent Nigeria.”

Amokachi is one of three new additions to the Super Eagles squad being announced today. Julius Aghahowa, the ex-Shaktar Donetsk and Wigan forward renowned for his pace and acrobatic goal celebrations, and former Roda midfielder Garba Lawal join ex-Chelsea ace Celestine Babayaro in Okocha’s team.

Amokachi knows his side have a tough task though, having been drawn in Group B with Brazil, Italy and China.

“When I was asked to play by Jay-Jay, I thought it was a great thing, and I’m now working on my fitness,” he added.

Amokachi has fond memories of his time in England with Everton and has attended concerts at The O2: “It is an amazing place with a superb atmosphere, so hopefully we can reproduce that for Star Sixes.”

Daniel Amokachi is the latest signing for Star Sixes, a new six-a-side world cup for legends taking place at The O2, London, July 13-16. Tickets, starting at just £30 adults and £10 children, are on sale at Ticketmaster & AXS.
