Rodríguez started his career with Pumas, before moving to Pachuca where he made his biggest impact. He had eight years and over 300 matches at Pachuca, split by a year away at Monterrey in 1997. He went on to become club captain and won three league titles and a CONCACAF Champions Cup.  On the international scene he played at Copa América in 2001 where Mexico finished runners-up.
